This research proposal addresses the critical issue of authenticity loss among youth due to pervasive social media trends. I would investigate when and how societies began to lose their deep understanding of authenticity, particularly focusing on the younger demographic (ages 13-25), who are most vulnerable to the negative impacts of social media. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, this study will examine the psychological effects of perceived inauthenticity in digital environments and how these platforms inhibit authentic creativity and self-expression among youth. By combining qualitative observations and quantitative data collection, I aim to identify specific ways in which social media contributes to diminished mental clarity and compromised authenticity in young individuals. The primary goal of the research is to foster a transformative understanding among youths and their parents regarding the harmful effects of social media on authenticity and mental health. Results are expected to provide crucial insights into psychological mechanisms behind social media addiction and its subsequent effects on authenticity. Ultimately, this research will help bridge existing gaps in empirical knowledge on digital authenticity, guiding youth towards healthier, more authentic forms of self-expression and social engagement. Potential limitations include individual variations in mental health and personal experiences with social media platforms.
